So, I'm a bit late I'm sure, but I just found out that Johnny Depp is Sweeney Todd in the movie based on the Stephen Sondheim musical! How exciting! Of course, its directed by Tim Burton (who apparently loves to have Depp star in his movies) and Tim Burton's longtime love Helena Bonham Carter. Also starring is Alan Rickman, who I just think is great. :-}
ooooh, And Anthony Stewart Head (Giles from Buffy) plays a smaller part! Good for him.
Speaking of Giles, he's also on series 6 of monarch of the Glen. How fun is that?

Thursday 13
We are preparing for a yard sale and went through our games today. I have Disney Trivia 1&2, Disney monopoly and Sorry. This inspired my topic for this Thursday. :-}

1. The Little Mermaid's Part of your world. The perfect song for a girl who feels like an outside and wants to experience normal life.

2. Mulan's Reflection.

3.Dumbo's Baby mine. I don't like Dumbo the movie, but I love this song. Especially when Bette Midler sings it in Beaches. :-}

4. Lady and the Tramp's He's a Tramp. Such a fun song.

5. The Aristocat's Everybody wants to be a cat.

6.Pete's Dragon's Candle on the Water. I couldn't find a picture of Helen Reddy that had anything to do with Pete's Dragon.

7.American Tale's Somewhere out there. What a song for day dreamers and lonely folks.

8. Newsie's Santa Fe. Who hasn't longed to be somewhere else.

9. Hunchback of Notre Dame's God Help the Outcast. Such a beautiful song, though not entirely nice to the church. But I think sometimes the church deserves it. Its good to be reminded of what the church is meant to be. A refuge for outcasts.

10. The live action Cinderella's Ten Minutes Ago.

11. Muppet Christmas Carol's The Love Has Gone. I know, I'm a sucker for sad songs.

12. A happier song, Happiest Millionaire's Fortuosity.

13. Another Newsies' song: Seize the day. I love the harmonies on this song. Its just gorgeous. I can't believe I don't own it.

Happy Birthday, Natalie Wood!
One of my favorite tragic actresses, Natalie Wood born in 1938 in San Fransisco, the child of a horrible stage mother, Natalie started in movies when she was 8 years old.

She was in 20 movies before she turned 16, including The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and Miracle on 34th Street.

Though she was in many movies, my favorite is Gypsy. Its nice to hear the real Natalie sing, even if her voice was not spectacular. Especially after they dubbed her voice in West Side Story.

She drowned under mysterious circumstances, she lived to be only 43.

13 of my favorite classic movie actors/actresses (in alphabetical order)

1. Ann Miller, 1923-2004. Ann Miller was a wonderful entertainer. She began working in movies in 1937 as a 14 year old claiming to be 18 (so that she could work without restrictions). She continued to work as late as 1998. I love her in On the Town when she is trying to get over her obsession with men, Kiss Me Kate as she sings Cole Porter's Why can't you behave, and in You Can't take it with you where she dances away as a married woman, of course, she was only 14 at the time...She may not play a married woman, but I think that she did.

2. Barbara Stanwyck, 1907-1990. Born in New York and partially raised in foster care, Barbara started working when she was 13. My favorites of her films are The Lady Eve, and Christmas in Connecticut. It was also her birthday this week.

3. Betty Garrett, born in 1919. She was always the kooky girl (on the Town), faithful sister (My sister Eileen or the girl who was madly in love with the boy who didn't even notice her (Take me out to the ballgame).

4. Bing Crosby, 1903-1977. The classic crooner. Mmm. I love his singing. He always managed to burst into song. High Society is one of my favorites. Holiday Inn is wonderful. And of course, there are the Road to movie, my favorite of those is Road to Bali.

5. Cary Grant, 1904-1986. Born in England. Cary Grant is the playful gentleman of classic films. Some of my favorites include to Catch a Thief, Philadelphia Story and Indiscreet.

6. Celeste Holm, born in 1917. She was wonderful. Try All About Eve and High Society.

7. Frank Sinatra, 1915-1998. The classic yet slightly more modern crooner. I could listen to him for hours, especially his earlier music. In Anchors Away he's a sailor on leave from the navy. There's always Guys and Dolls. Pal Joey is such a sad movie; if only he made better decisions.

8. Gene Kelly, 1912-1996. The man's dancer, where Fred Astaire was suave and gentlemanly, Kelly was manly and strong. Check out his footwork in the well known Singin' in the Rain, find a dark Kelly in For me and My Gal and fall in love in Take me out to the Ball Game.

9. Grace Kelly, 1929-1982. She was so beautiful and could be elegant or fun. It was unfortunate that her main stream acting career ended so early. I love her in To Catch a Thief, High Society and Hitchcock's Rear Window.

10. Marilyn Monroe, 1926-1962. The tragic miss Monroe. She was beautiful, but her life was a mess. Find her husband hunting in How to Marry a Millionaire, hear her sing her famous Diamonds are a girls best friend in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes or see her cause a little bit of scandal when she wins a Miss contest even though she has a baby in We're not Married.

11. Peter Lawford, 1923-1984. He played my absolute favorite Laurie from Little Women. He was the original Jimmy in Oceans Eleven and though I haven't seen it, he played Nick in the Thin Man tv series.

12. Russ Tamblyn, born in 1934. I've mostly seen him in supporting roles, but have lately found him fascinating. If you're interested, start with The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm and move on to Hit the Deck and West Side Story. Fun fact: he's also Amber Tamblyn's (Joan of Arcadia) father).

13. Vera-Ellen, 1921-1981. She was so cute! I enjoyed her in On the Town, White Christmas and Three Little Words.

Happy Birthday, James Cagney!
What a great week for birthdays!
I've always meant to watch more of his movies. So far, I've seen Angels with Dirty Faces and Yankee Doodle Dandy...but that doesn't seem right, I must have seen more than that!

Happy Birthday, Barbara Stanwyck!
1907: Actress Barbara Stanwyck (born Ruby Stevens), (Dynasty II, Big Valley, Thorn Birds) born. What to do? In honor of her birthday, check out one of her movies!
My favorite: The Lady Eve. She plays the daughter of a riverboat gambler and con man.
Christmas in Connecticut. She is a woman famous for her home making articles, only problem is, she doesn't have a home, just an apartment, and no family.
The Two Mrs. Carrolls. She meets and falls in love with a man whose wife is very ill. The wife dies and Barbra marries him, only to find out that there is much more going on than she realizes.
Cory Feldman (Of the Cory's of the 80's).
Check out:
Goonies. A band of adventurers set off on the hunt for treasure.
The Burbs. When new neighbors arrive, all hell breaks loose.
Dream a little Dream. My favorite of his movies.
Will Ferrell. I really only like a couple of his movies. So check out Elf, (ever heard of Christmas in July?), Zoolander or perhaps Bewitched.
Other famous people born today: Orville Redenbacher popcorn king and Ginger Rogers (did lots of movies where she danced with Fred Astaire). There are more, but I don't care as much about them. :-}

Today in History
in 1881 Outlaw William H. Bonney Junior, alias "Billy the Kid," was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Supposedly, some people think that he didn't really die.
1910: Animator William Hanna born. I loved watching his cartoons when I was little! My favorite was Scooby Doo!
I'm a little obsessed with igoogle's today in history feature. It is so fun!

Fun Geeky Day
What a fun day for geeks everywhere. Not only is it Harrison Ford's (1942) birthday, its Patrick Stewart's (1940) birthday and Erno Rubik (1944) - inventor of the Rubik'c cube puzzle.
Stuff
I've recently decided that I have way too much stuff and am not mobile enough.
So, I've been going through my stuff deciding what to get rid of.
I will allow myself:
1 bookcase of books
1 bookcase (slightly smaller) of DVDs.
1 case of music cds.
1 closet full of clothes
1 dresser full of clothes
1 shelf of bathroom toiletries
1 drawer in the room with lotions, etc.
So, theoretically, I shouldn't have that much stuff. Of course, I have tons of stuff. Way too many books and movies. Josh and I have been going through the movies though and weeding things that I haven't watched for quite a while and am not very attached to. I like the idea of the things we own either being friends or acquaintances. We should keep the friends and get rid of the acquaintances.
Ooh, and I was watching HGTV the other day and they said to turn all of your clothing on hangers around in the closet so that it hooks over the back instead of front and if you actually wear the item, turn it the other way when you put it back in your closet. In 6 months, get rid of everything that is facing the wrong way. Hm.

13 Movies that deal with religion in an intriguing way.
1. Dogma
Bartleby and Loki have been kicked out of heaven. They want back in. Trying to stop them is the last Scion, a woman who has lost her faith in God and found herself on a strange journey. My favorite part, when Alanis Morissette shows up as God.
2. Constantine
Keanu Reeves and Shia something or other star in this tale of Constantine's search for redemption. Angels and demons are real, but its all a game that God and Satan play, hoping to win the most souls in the end. People are tormented and lines are crossed in the search for Isabell's or Angela's (I can't remember which twin dies) killer.
3. Stigmata
Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne. Frankie is a non-catholic who starts exhibiting stigmata. Gabriel Byrne is the priest sent to investigate.
4. The Devil's Advocate.
Kevin has his dream job. But maybe he has a bit too much power and temptation since his boss is sort of Satan and offering him the world. Though this is a dirty movie, I love that they comment on vanity. Vanity gets them every time.
5. The Omen
Who names their child Damien? How evil is that? Of course, he's gonna be evil. Especially since he's the anti-Christ. Hello.
6. The Sound of Music
Maria, she's a nun. Until she falls in love with the father of her charges.
7. The Order
Heath Ledger is very good in this film. A more accurate title would be, the sin eater. He discovers the world of the sin eater, a man who, for a price, will take your sins away right before you die. He takes your sin unto himself and you are absolved.
8. Bless the Child
Maggie raises her sisters child from infancy. As the child grows, there is something different about her. Then children start dying in their city. Maggie must protect her at any cost.
9. Lost Souls
Winona Ryder is Maya, a member of a small group that believes that just as God became man in Jesus, so will Satan take on human form. She must stop the transformation.
10. The Haunting.
yes, this is stretching it a bit, but she seems like a good catholic girl. Lili Taylor's character has cared for her ailing mother for years, an eternity in purgatory. She receives a mysterious phone call and finds herself as part of a supposed sleep study, but truly a study on fear and group responses to fear. Yes, its corny, thanks dad, but I love the house in this movie. It is so elaborate and detailed.
11. Fallen.
Denzel Washington is on the hunt of a killer. A killer who was put to death... The spirit in him walks the earth, transferring from person to person with a mere touch.
12. Da Vinci Code.
Long and boring. What a long and boring movie. My dad fell asleep.
13. Yentl
Yes, it is explicitly religious. But what a look into their lives! And a wonderful soundtrack. :-}

AFI Top 25 musicals
This list is much shorter than the AFI top 100 lists, so hopefully, if anyone is reading this, you won't get bored. :-}
1 SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, yes, I love Singin' in the rain, but not for its plot of course, I love the music. Gene Kelly is wonderful and Debbie Reynolds is so cute.
2 WEST SIDE STORY, of course. I only watch the first half though, I don't like it once people start dying. I had all of the songs memorized at one time.
3 WIZARD OF OZ, of course. Not my favorite, though its alright. Judy Garland fascinated me, as most of the actresses who died young do.
4 SOUND OF MUSIC, I have this on DVD. I wanted to be a nun for a while, if only I was catholic. But now I'm married, so I'm glad I wasn't a nun.
5 CABARET, this is one of my favorites. I love Liza and Joel Gray, he is so creepy in this movie.
6 MARY POPPINS, yes. I am told that i watched this quite a lot when I was little.
7 STAR IS BORN, I'm not sure if I've seen this entire movie. I know that I've seen parts.
8 MY FAIR LADY, I love my fair lady. Just you wait, enry iggins, just you wait....
9 AMERICAN IN PARIS, yes, though not my favorite. Sadly, I get bored with the extended dance scene.
10 MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS. This is one of my favorites. I love when Judy Garland sings about the boy next door.
11 KING AND I, yes. It is a very sad movie.
12 CHICAGO, yes but bleck. The characters have no redeeming qualities! I felt so bad for John C. Reilly. Poor guy. When I saw the movie, I had heard that the dancing was so spectacular, but I was disappointed since I grew up on Musicals. The dancing was fine, but not really impressive.
13 42ND STREET, Actually, no.
14 ALL THAT JAZZ, not yet.
15 TOP HAT, of course.
16 FUNNY GIRL, another of my favorites, Barbra Streisand has such a marvelous voice. Sadie, Sadie, married lady..
17 BAND WAGON, I don't think so.
18 YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, yes. So odd to see James Cagney singing and dancing.
19 ON THE TOWN, I love their tour of New York! So cute. And I love Ann Miller, she was just wonderful.
20 GREASE, of course. I don't like the ending though, he should have been nicer, not her naughtier!
21 SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS, I love the scene where she teaches them to dance.
22 BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Very good movie.
23 GUYS AND DOLLS, yep
24 SHOW BOAT, oh, its so sad! Its kind of a depressing movie.
25 MOULIN ROUGE! I love Moulin Rouge! Ewan McGregor has the best voice.
1 SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, yes, I love Singin' in the rain, but not for its plot of course, I love the music. Gene Kelly is wonderful and Debbie Reynolds is so cute.
